Heroes of the Week

  1. Kranjcar and Corluka – The Croats were on the mark for Spurs against Bolton. First time two Croats have scored in the same game in the Premiership. This also marks the first goal for Kranjcar who moved to White Hart Lane from Portsmouth. Corluka on the other hand scored after a long period of time.
  2. Hull City/Phil Brown – Hull have had a miserable season so far. Talks of the sacking of Phil Brown were usual and required the chairman to step in to assure the manager his job was safe. 2-1 win over Wigan, who had beaten Chelsea the week before, certainly got him out of the ditch. For now.
  3. Portsmouth/Paul Hart – There is only one defense which was available to Phil Brown before the weekend or there was only one thing which he could content himself with, Portsmouth were doing worse than his side. Pompey had been in the news only due to their takeover saga being a long yawn inducing procedure. This weekend they got the first points of the season with a 1-0 win over Wolves.
  4. Arsenal’s attack – Arsenal were rampant at the Emirates. Went down twice but Wenger’s side always expected to come back strong and fight hard and so they did. 6-2 mauling of Blackburn Rovers proves that.
  5. Theo Walcott – Aside from being part of the point 4 above, Walcott made his first appearance of the season in the league and was on the score sheet. However, that can be argued over Blackburn Rovers already being down and out at that point of time. Great return nonetheless for the England international.
  6. Junior Stanislas – Stanislas scored in the 90th minute to salvage a crucial point for the Londoners who have been struggling off late despite some promising play. The game at Uptown Park against Fulham ended 2-2 which would leave Fulham doubly gutted since they conceded a goal at such a late juncture in the game and they had fought hard to be up until that point even with 10 men on the pitch.
  7. Chelsea – After they lost 3-1 to Wigan, Ancelotti and Terry questioned the players’ attitude towards the game. Liverpool had done a double over the Blues last season so they were never to be undermined. It was a scrappy affair but Chelsea were dominant throughout. Liverpool barely had any chances to score as Chelsea’s back line held on very well and contained Torres fantastically.
  8. Dimitar Berbatov – I’ll put the Bulgarian here for his amazing finishing for the first goal against Sunderland. He has been playing smartly even in the Champions League with some intricate passing and delicate touches for his team mates.
  9. Cesc Fabregas – If fantastic performances deserved a jail sentence then Cesc Fabregas should be hanged for his scintillating performance. He had a role in all five goals he played till. With 4 assists and 1 goal along with plenty of shots on and off target, he was adjudged man of the match and rightly so. Man of the week in my view and don’t think many would disagree.

Zeroes of the Week

  1. Alex Mcleish – After Phil Brown and Paul Hart, Alex Mcleish had been the most likely to get the sack. He made things go really bad for him over the weekend as Birmingham lost 2-1 away to Burnley. Now only if the Hong Kong tycoon can let him stay on the job!
  2. Wigan Athletic – After a fantastic display against Chelsea, Wigan couldn’t replicate their performance. Going down to Hull who had been less than convincing throughout the season. Although fair play to Hull who didn’t leave any chance for Wigan.
  3. Everton – Everton’s run of wins came to an abrupt end at home against Stoke. Everton certainly should have won and the way they had been playing they should have won.
  4. Arsenal’s defence – Conceded two scrappy goals which could have easily been avoided. Complacency and lack of enthusiasm suddenly creeps into the Arsenal’s defence and that was exploited by Rovers. Rovers could have scored more but had themselves to blame for ruing those chances.
  5. Liverpool – Rafa Benitez and his men wanted to bounce back from their 2-0 loss in Florence against Fiorentina. They were going up against a Chelsea side who had conceded three points last week at the DW Stadium. Instead Liverpool lost to Chelsea 2-0 as well. Anelka and Malouda scored. The Blues were too much for the Reds to handle and rumours about sacking Benitez would fly thick and fast.
